REINVIGORATING SOUTH BANK THROUGH INTEGRATED SELF-DELIVERY
CLIENT: NATIVE LAND
STATUS: COMPLETE
LOCATION: SOUTHBANK
A comprehensive transformation of one of London’s busiest cultural hubs towards a 1.4 million sq ft development. Our scope was integrated, including the demolition of a ten-storey building, constructing a four- storey basement, and a 19 level superstructure.
Bound by the Thames to the north and busy traffic routes to the south and east, Bankside Yards West was a logistical challenge that called for efficient and effective works. Our self-delivery capabilities allowed us to develop a solution that overlapped phases – including environmental, soft strip, and demolition – to provide a streamlined programme and enhanced timeline.
Completing a McGee Record for Concrete Pours
In a McGee-first, we continuously poured 1615m2 of concrete at basement Level 2. Four pumps worked non-stop for just under 12 hours to deliver 215 loads of concrete, completing the 3m deep basement slab.
An Innovation in Basement Box Waterproofing
Our team developed a waterproof technique that allowed for a ‘dry’ basement box construction. This reduced the need for weather proofing and the extra labour required to clear wet areas. This significantly added value to the project by streamlining the programme.
Keeping Businesses Open with Stackable Cassettes
The neighbouring nightclub needed a solution to its evacuation route to keep its doors open. We installed stackable, steel-framed walkway cassettes. These cassettes could be laid out during opening hours to form an evacuation walkway, then lifted and stacked during working hours to provide clear access to the site.
Taking Care of the Community
Within the bustle of Blackfriars, the site had to be conscious of cyclists, pedestrians, and high traffic. We worked with TfL to undertake protection measures for all using the busy superhighway to keep everyone safe.
