KICKING OFF THE EXCAVATION ON THE FORTHCOMING LARGEST RAILWAY STATION IN THE UK

CLIENT: BALFOUR BEATTY VINCI SYSTRA JV

STATUS: COMPLETE

LOCATION: HAMMERSMITH & FULHAM

Old Oak Common is set to be the best-connected and largest railway station in the UK. Linking London to the UK at large, this project was part of the larger scheme for HS2.

PROJECT OVERVIEW.

Our bulk excavation and temporary works kicked off the construction phases of a new high-speed network. We set up the site by excavating capping material, undertaking testing and categorising hazardous material. We also called on our integrated capabilities to design and install sheet piling, facilitating the ground reduction works and temporary works design to ensure structural integrity for the follow-on works.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY STATS.
42,000m3 WE EXCAVATED THE EQUIVALENT OF SIX FOOTBALL PITCHES
98% REUSE OR RECYCLE OF DEMOLISHED MATERIALS
6,500m3+ OF RUBBLE WAS CLEARED AND PROESSED ON SITE FOR REUSE
15,858 LORRY MOVEMENTS
OLD OAK COMMON WON THE HEALTH & SAFETY CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR AWARD FROM BBVS.
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS.

Recognised As High-Achieving Considerate Constructors
The site scored 42/45 – a testament to our commitment to strict Health & Safety and community guidelines.

The CCS said ‘this can be considered one of the best sites visited’. The auditor commended our social integration, encouragement of training, and mandatory skills cards across the works.

Getting Involved with the Local Community
Old Oak Common hosted children from the Bubble and Squeak holiday camp to provide games and workshops. In a fun day out, we helped to educate the kids on site safety as well as the ins and outs of every day work on site.

Thinning Out Road Bases
To construct the road bases we needed more than we could salvage from our usual method of re-using demolition arisings – meaning we needed significant import material.

As a sustainable solution we were able to reduce the thickness of the sub-bases by 60% through the use of geomembranes and specification – no further import needed.

Increased Curing Time, Without Slowing Down
We discovered an opportunity to increase the curing time of concretes without affecting the programme.

We were able to specify lower Ordinary Portland Cement content concretes to reduce the carbon impact of the concretes on average by 50%.

THIS CAN BE CONSIDERED ONE OF THE BEST SITES VISITED….

APPROPRIATE GOODWILL WORKS ARE PROVIDED AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR SOCIAL INTEGRATION/ CHARITY FUNDRAISING ARE ONGOING. EXCELLENT ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICE, GOOD PERFORMANCE, MONITORING, AND REPORTING IS IN PLACE.
