Admiralty Arch
The iconic, Admiralty Arch, Grade I listed building on the corner of Trafalgar Square, is set to become a luxury, Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
The £60m restoration and refurbishment will transform the iconic arch into the finest hotel in London, one with unique royal and political heritage dating back to the 1900s.
Appointed by the Client, Admiralty Arch Holdings Ltd, McGee to design and deliver two, 2-storey basements on both sides of the arch and construction of four linked tunnels below ground to house amenities for a luxury hotel, including, a spa and pool and a ballroom.
Its location may be an attraction to many, but it also provides the challenge as traffic must keep flowing during construction of the new basement. Only one of three lanes could be closed at any one time. Should there also be a ceremonial procession, any sign of construction would need to be completely removed at extremely short notice.
