Located in the heart of Leicester Square, with a footfall of over 35 million, McGee delivered an integrated solution for client, Edwardian Hotel’s newest development, The Londoner Hotel, from demolition through to structures.
The 350-bed hotel, at six storeys below ground and 10 storeys above is the deepest commercial basement ever excavated in London. It plays host to the hotel’s new cinema, bars and restaurants all set 35m below street level, about the same depth as a new Cross Rail tunnel.
In a city short on space, the ability to unlock more, clearly has huge advantages in terms of adding extra value. Yet compared with building up, building down comes with its own risks. Taking an integrated approach can navigate the challenges and mitigate risk, in turn, delivering certainty.
